Here at InTune Studios, we LOVE what we do, sharing the joy of making music and art with children and families.  We LOVE watching the process of fine arts as it helps children blossom musically and personally.  And we love the children and families who choose to share this experience with us !  We want to SHARE our LOVE with you, and if you would SHARE your LOVE with us, I believe all of our hearts would “grow three sizes that day.”  (since we’ve been so Grinchy lately – though it’s all been in fun.)

So your child likes Trains

Whoo! Whoo ! ALL Aboard !  Children LOVE things that go ! Some of us never grow out of it. I love train rides and long road trips that give us a chance to feel the wind in our hair, see new places and connect with our traveling friends.

Trains are especially exciting for young children, with all the sounds, the motions, and the adventures !  Most folks are aware of Thomas, and all the wonderful stories of he and his friends.  But there are many other wonderful resources, ie. books, movies, websites, and more about unique trains, and even railroad track layers.  In the following linked blog posts, I have listed some of my favorites ! 

This coming semester,  In Our Time:  Away We GO!, the children will love Shiny Dinah, her book, her songs, and the big case in her shape, as well as exploring the many other methods we use to get places !    In Imagine That: Toys I Make, Trips I Take, we help set up a train set in our Toy Store, and pretend we are going on a train ride… but where?  Our students learn to draw maps to show where they want their train ride to go.  Take your child’s train play to a whole new level… and let them learn music concepts in the process !   This can take your child’s train play to a whole new level.    Try out one of these classes this week at a Free Demo class.  And join us for delighful traveling fun and learning at the beginning of February as part of our Spring Semester of Kindermusik.   The process of music will amaze you.

Try a music or art class at January Demo classes

Of course, you want to try a Kindermusik class with Ms. Debbie, or an art class with Ms. Carolyn, but you are worried about the cost, or whether your child will like it, or whether they will disrupt the class, or whether you will have to dance or sing.  Well, don’t worry so much, you can dance and sing when you want to, just like your child is encouraged to participate in their own way.  Your child may not be ecstatic about it the first day, but will grow to love it in just a few weeks (when they become familiar with the routine), and we can work through the cost issue (I’ve got my ways.)  But first, just come and try it out a class.

Top 5 Gifts of Music

“I LOVE Music !” your child says, whether with words, or with their body when music is playing and when enjoying an instrument,  or with their facial expressions when you are singing with them.  If they could, they might tell you their top 5 gifts of music like this.

I love to listen in the car, and sing along with the fun songs.  I love to make music with my instruments, and anything else I can bang on or shake ! Most of all, I love it when my family and I enjoy music activities together:

#1 – Kindermusik makes it fun and easy for me and my family to learn new songs and music activities, and gives us all the materials to keep the fun and learning going at home, and in the car !   And it makes me feel so good because Mrs. Debbie thinks I’m so unique and wonderful, and helps me learn in my own way.

#2 – It is so much fun to unwrap and explore new  musical Instruments !

Mrs. Debbie recommends these shopping places:

• The ONLINE Kindermusik Store has LOTS of great music, instruments, scarves, and even sets (best prices!).  Please “tell” them that Mrs. Debbie sent you by entering her educator code, #15788, at checkout.
• At the studio, Mrs. Debbie has a limited supply of integrated music sets (that means CDs, books, instruments, props and more that ALL connect on a specific theme that kids LOVE.)  Click the yellow link, or contact Debbie for more details.
• Music for Little People has the best, most expansive collection of musical stuff for our young children.  Mrs. Debbie could get in a LOT of trouble here! 
• Locally, there are several great music stores.  Did you know Brooke Potteryalso has a nice small selection?
• Mrs. Debbie’s Advice: choose instruments your child can be successful with.   Some instruments, like a violin or guitar, are best considered with recommendations for the right size and quality, as well as lessons from a music educator.

#3 – I would LOVE to learn songs about things I am interested in !!!

On play.kindermusik.com, there are hundreds of songs , stories, and music to choose from.  AND, there is a way to SEARCH for songs about the things I like most, like TRAINS, CARS, ANIMALS, Princesses, or growing a garden.      It is easy to download these songs, and the first 10 credits are free when you log in.   Families enrolled in a Kindermusik class not only get the CDs, but they can dowload all the music from the class for FREE, along with MORE fun activities that are part of the semester.

NEW Program – Kindermusik Sign and Sing

You can see the brain wheels turning as older babies and toddlers try to communicate…  as they try to tell an older sibling or adult what they need or want.  You can also see the dazed look on the parent’s face as they try so hard to understand.  Amazingly, older siblings can be impressive interpreters.  But they are not always available.

Baby Sign Language has been around for awhile in many different forms.   Indeed for hearing babies and toddlers that have no developmental issues, providing an option for a peaceful way to communicate their needs and wants.

Kindermusik International teamed up with Signing Smart, who put a lot of research into the best methods for parents to use to help set up positive situations in which their child WANTS to use signs to communicate.  And they established methods for helping children.  The result is Kindermusik Sign and Sing, specifically designed for children from 6 – 36 months along with a parent or significant care provider (a grandparent, aunt, or even a nanny).

At InTune Studios, we are now offering the Sign and Sing program, which is offered on Tuesday mornings at 11:30 am.,  directly following a 10:30 Kindermusik Our Time class, both taught by Tiffany Stokes – the director of InTune Studios, a licensed Kindermusik Educator, and a sister to a sibling with hearing impairments.  

 This is a research-proven program based on methods shown to speed language development in hearing children, ease frustration, and enhance long-term learning abilities.

Session A – Beginner
45 minute class with caregiver (mom, dad, grandparent, nanny, etc.)

This class combines songs and playful interaction to help children learn American Sign Language. The five-session class gives parents the tools to learn more than 50 American Sign Language Signs for children ages 6 months to 3 years.

  SESSION B (Advanced)
  

  This session reviews the first three Keys to Signing Smart Success^™ and provides an in-depth look at the final and fourth Key. New concepts such as in and out, up and down, big and little, tall and short will be explored with more songs and animal-themed activities.

   At Home Materials are included with both classes.

  Find out more on: Sign and Sing – Some Questions Answered :  Holly Lesnick does an excellent job of answering the questions:  Will using sign language delay the speech of normally speaking children?  Or will it enhance their language development?

  Here is a bit of research on the particular program we offer (Sign and Sing) which was developed by Signing Smart:  Compared to developmental norms, Signing Smart children have enriched language and communication skills:
  • While the average 8 month old will have no spoken words, the average Signing Smart child will have 5 signs and 1 word.
  • While the average 12 month old will have 3-5 spoken words, the average Signing Smart child will have 25 signs and 16 words
  • At 18 months, the average child will have 10-50 spoken words. In contrast, the average Signing Smart child will have 79 signs and 105 words.
  • In addition, a majority of Signing Smart children begin combining signs and words or signs and signs together to form little sentences at 11-14 months. Compare this to non-signers, who do not begin to combine words into short sentences (e.g., “Da-da car”) until 20 months old on average!

  These results indicate that ASL signs, used in combination with Signing Smart strategies, facilitate both overall communicative abilities as well as spoken language skills in hearing infants and toddlers.

How do you to communicate with your child?   Do you easily understand what your growing child wants and needs through listening to his sounds and watching his actions?  If so, congratulations, you are a very observant parent, who listens to their child without the need for words or ASL signs.  I KNOW parents like this.  I also KNOW parents who are challenged to understand the garble that their child is so intently trying to share.  AND, those who deal with major tantrums because their child is frustrated with his or her inability to communicate.

East Polk County, Florida, is singing and dancing in 2009!

Chugging into the Zoo Station is Ally-Ally-O !    The Super Spring Semester in Winter Haven, featuring the Zoo Train Semester is HERE!    Classes started Feb. 2-3, and we had a grand time on our first day of class.  There is still room in our Monday Night class.  And we are looking to make a class work on Tuesdays at 9:30.   Late enrollments are accepted, and tuition will be prorated for just the remaining classes.

There is one last FREE Kindermusik event at the Haines City Library, Wed. Feb. 18th at 10:00 am.  Amy will be there with her wonderful wild tales, tails, and all this fun music.

Kindermusik in Winter Haven is moving right down the road to V.I.P. Kids, located at the end of the right arm of the shops at High Pointe Plaza on Cypress Gardens Blvd.

The Kindermusik Spring Semester starts during the first week of January.  We are offering 3 programs:

• Village – babies up to 18 months – Unit:  Zoom Buggy !  All about things that GO!
• Family Adventures – 1 1/2 – 4 years old – Unit:  Zoo Train  – fun for the whole family.
• ABC Music & Me – 4 – 6 year olds – An movement oriented approach to basic music theory through studying musical cultures from around the world.  Check it out!

A few months ago, when Amy and I were doing a Kindermusik Demo for an Art Expo at the WH Library, we met Sandy.  She and her 5 yr. old son and 8 yr. old daughter were truly enjoying the musical activities.  After the presentation Sandy approached us and shared with us that she was moving her fine clothing boutique to a new location.  In the new space, there was enough room to include a small “center for the arts”, including instruction in art, etiquette, and modeling for young children.  She is very dedicated to providing opportunities for young children to thrive through participating in artistic studies.  She was very excited with the Kindermusik program and could see how our goals are so similar.  Through the past several months, she has moved in to her new location at High Pointe Plaza (right next to Cypress Gardens Amusement Park), and she is truly enjoying watching her aspirations come alive.

Please go meet Sandy, and let her show you where we will be enjoying our Kindermusik classes.  We’ll have some nice cushy carpets to sit on, in her well-lit, very clean space.  Amy and I are very excited to facilitate magical Kindermusik moments with you and your family in this fabulous location.

Reflections of Spring: Family Time in Winter Haven

The Kindermusik Family Time semester, Make Way for Music, is the fourth installment in the Family Time series, and completes the set of puppet characters from the Jelly Bean band with Rex, the Lion.  More importantly, it has been an excellent introduction, and vehicle for families to explore the many aspects of music with their children.  Mrs. Bernadette has offered a musical haven for families with her sweet demeanor and gentle way of engaging the children in the activities.  The following pictures celebrate their time together this semester, and the conclusion of this phase of Kindermusik in the Winter Haven area.  Due to the interests of her daughter, whom she is home schooling, Mrs. Bernadette will be taking a break from teaching Kindermusik for awhile to support her daughter in a Marine Biology program.
