Feed their creative side !   Make ’em hungry for more.

Children who explore their creative sides see life from many different perspectives.  These children are better able to solve problems, handle the challenges of a continually changing society, AND they are better able to look at life from the positive side.  Expand their perspective this summer !

Storytelling benefits children of ALL ages

Why TELL a story – without books, without pictures – to children?   Why choose to tell it face to face, instead of choosing a book, or watching a movie?    A few years ago, I attended a workshop with some of my favorite storytellers, Myra Davis and Phyllis, the Peace River Tales Tandem Storytellers ***.   I was overwhelmed with the positive benefits and became enlightened and motivated to become a more effective story teller – for my children, for my students, and for myself.  I TRULY believe that storytelling has many of the same benefits of using good story based songs.   The following is a complilation of their ideas and my experiences.

  1. Storytelling trains the ears and eyes to listen – As a child experiences storytelling, he is learning to be passively, yet fully engaged in an activity, and that as he watches and listens more closely, he gets more out of it.  This serves to increase the attention span, and lets the child know he is an important listener.  (One of the first things parents comment that they enjoy about a Kindermusik class is the increased ability of their child to listen.)
  2. Hearing stories with interesting and patterned speech helps break the code of language; the sounds of words, the rhythm of sentences, and the emotion of stories.  This is true even with the youngest of children.
  3. Telling stories helps children to articulate effectively so they can be understood.  It helps develop understanding of the parts of the story and builds sequencing skills.
  4. Positive Associations – As a child experiences an entertaining story, he/she pairs this positive emotion with storytelling, which encourages them to explore and experience it again, listening to others, perhaps even to recorded stories, and eventually telling their own.
  5. A Carrier of Knowledge – Just like a delicious casserolle can offer a wide variety of healthy foods that taste delicious all together, good stories can offer bits of history, geography,  good morals, strong values, and insights into life in a way that NO lecture ever could.

Once the child gets older, the benefits just increase.  Storytelling:

  • provides opportunities for ALL ages to interact as both listeners and tellers.
  • develops an awareness of and sensitivity to the thoughts and feelings of listeners and tellers
  • stimulates and expands the imagination and mental visualization.  (THIS is a critical feature that visual elements of picture books and movies does NOT allow for.)
  • uses and develops oral language
  • develops confidence in tellers of all ages
  • promotes inventive thinking and problem-solving skills
  • broadens the knowledge base
  • generates innovative and creative responses
  • increases concentration and the ability to recall information
  • provides opportunities to explore diverse cultures through their folktales
  • is a springboard into reading and writing activities.

Reading and writing are, and have always been an extension of storytelling.  Stories used to live on through the tellers from generation to generation.  Books allowed stories to continue on.

It is equally important to READ BOOKS (as I have discussed in other blog postings), as it has some similar benefits, and different benefits.  GOOD audio books also have many of the same benefits as storytelling.

But the power of storytelling face to face is ever so much more full of life and interactive, allowing language and mental imagery flourish, esp. when the child can be an active part of the process.

I love carrying on the tradition, finding the stories, and passing them on.  I LOVE finding and listening to exceptional storytellers.  I LOVE hearing my children develop their own stories.  Making our own family stories is another benefit I have TRULY embraced.  But that is a WHOLE different blog posting.

*** (TANDEM storytelling will be the topic of another posting.  These people take storytelling to a level of higher art.)

Kindermusik offers a special summer adventure camp, called TELL ME A TALE for big kids (4 ½ – 8 years old) that tunes in to some fabulous stories from around the world – expanding on them with sound effects, MUSIC, crafts, costumes, and dramatic play.   I am excited to be offering that camp this summer – in the afternoons during the week of July 19.  See more details on my website:  http://musiconnx.yourvirtuoso.com .  If you live somewhere other than Polk Co. FL, try finding an educator near you that offers this program, www.kindermusik.com

Kindermusik Playdate – MY schedule or YOURS

Kindermusik developed this new program as a ONE-TIME event WITH materials.

This summer seems a GREAT time to offer these events, as families are struggling with summer schedules and financial hardships, but still want to add the joy of music to these days with their families.

The class activities will be typical of regular Kindermusik classes, but will be based on the theme of the materials that families will be able to take and use at home.

  • These events will be scheduled occasionally this  summer    Please take the survey to help me plan effectively
  • OR, you can choose to HOST a Kindermusik Playdate at a time convenient for you and your friends.  (see details below)

We have an incredible opportunity to use the overstock of Do-Re-Me & You products (which many of you may remember that I used to sell), which are now being offered at incredible prices.  The quantities of these products are limited, so this opportunity won’t last long.   I even have several sets that are no longer available.

Materials Cost:  $10 for CD  AND a book or instrument  (some may be less)    If you purchased the materials previously, there is no cost unless a craft is planned.

The Tuition is just $15 for the first child, $5 for each additional sibling.

Minimum enrollment of 6 is required to make a class.  Max of 12.
Families are allowed to participate only once for each set of materials.

The first events are already scheduled for June 25, 26, 29

  • Thursday, 10:30 am.  Friday, 11:45 am.,  Monday, 10:30 am.
  • NIGHT class:  Thursday at 5:15 pm.
  • Check for details & enroll on my Facebook Page.  Link at right ->
  • OR contact Debbie for details.  At this time, enrollment is only possible through direct contact (since it is so new, and I have limited  materials available.)  Email:  musiconnx@att.net

Please take this survey to indicate your preferences so I can plan effectively.

Host a Kindermusik Playdate     aka.  “Debbie On Demand”

YOU pick a date and time that you and your friends can get together, and invite me to YOUR HOUSE, or desired location for the event. The host chooses the theme and gets FREE tuition and materials, and a $20 discount on an upcoming Semester. Guests pay standard price.  Host and guests who register for an upcoming semester get discounts or prizes !  (But there is NO pressure for further enrollment.)

See my blog posting for further information.

Contact Debbie to schedule a Kindermusik Playdate at your house.  Choose your materials and theme.

Debbie’s note:  A full semester of Kindermusik REALLY is the BEST for the child, as it allows for the process of learning through music to work it’s magic week after week in the inner most places of a child, and provides ongoing support for parents in the process of learning to use music in the daily routines, and utilizing  “teachable moments”.

A One-Time event like the Kindermusik Playdate CAN  introduce the theme, the music, ideas and inspiration for parents to add music to their daily routines.  As I hope it will for your family.

This won’t be offered during regular semesters except for the 3rd Sat. of the month.  And may NOT be available next summer due to the limited quantities of the materials.

Participants who enroll for an upcoming full semester at the end of the event will get a GOOD discount, or prizes on the spot!

Peekaboo, I Love You ! Connecting with babies

Peekaboo scarvesThe game “peekaboo” is the most basic of parent-baby games, yet one of the richest.  In one simple gesture, baby’s beloved adult magically appears in response to baby’s desire – smiling, looking only at baby, telling baby with face and eyes alight, “I am here just for you, whenever you need me; you are adorable, and I love you so much!”  No wonder babies have a seemingly unending appetite for this game!

This game is played in every country and every home that has children.  In our newest semester of Village, specific to babies, we learn to say “I See You” in many languages.  And there are many other such songs and games that have been gathered from homes around the world, and shared in the upcoming summer semester of

Peek-a-booPeek-A-Boo, I Love You !

This program is specifically designed for families that want to offer their baby (2 – 18 months) and opportunity to freely explore music in a variety of ways, creatively interacting with a parent (or grandparent), and with other babies and their parents.  Ooooh, I just LOVE this baby time !

Peekaboo, I Love You!  Is a semester full of activities that celebrate the games that help develop relationship between a baby and her most important teachers – mom, dad, grandparents, siblings, and close friends.   The included activities are inspired by songs and baby games from many countries around the world and the special love between a parent and child.   These activities become personal rituals which strengthen the family bonds, and make the daily routines more special.  These activities stand up to the test of time because babies learn so much from them.

Includes FIVE  45 min. classes.  Each day focuses on a different theme:

  • I See You !
  • I Will Be Happy
  • Love Somebody
  • Good Old Summertime
  • I Love You !

A  FABULOUS set of home materials makes sure the learning continues ALL summer long:

  • Peekaboo kitQuality CD that includes all the music and rhymes from class, and more
  • a color poster with developmental thoughts and activity ideas
  • a duck puppet/bath mitt
  • a Ducky Gertie Ball (soft and spongy – way fun!)
  • and a variety of handouts full of ideas and resources

There are TWO WAYS to participate in this semester.

  • Once a week for 5 weeks:  FRIDAYS:  June 19, 26, and July 3, 17, and 24.
    • 9:30 am
  • Every 3rd SATURDAY for 5 months:  June 20, July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 19,  Oct. 17.

This program is offered so families can participate together, whether there is one or several children (mostly ages 1 – 5 yrs.).  It is a fabulous excursion into the dirt, grass, and air of a child’s back yard, and all the gooey worms,  elusive butterflies, creepy bugs,  beautiful birds, and, of course, pets.  See my QUESTION OF THE DAY at the bottom of the page.

This is in coordination with In Tune Studios.  It is also being held at that location, 818 Lemon Street.

Tiffany Stokes, owner of In Tune Studios, is also offering  Little Maestros as the morning session, covering basic musicianship, so the student could spend the WHOLE day, and the WHOLE week, just immersed in the wonderful world of music.

“This camp is a comprehensive music experience!  We will take a musical look through history, and learn about different instrument families in the orchestra, and even play some of these instruments.  Playful activities will also focus on learning, or reinforcing, the notes on the Treble staff, and many of the dynamic symbols of music.  Several orchestral compositions, such as “Peter and the Wolf”,  “The Unanswered Question”, and Haydn’s “The Surprise Symphony” will help bring classical music to life.  On Friday, students will create their own musical story soundtrack!

This morning session, 9:00 am. To 12:30 pm, is an additional $80, but there is no materials cost, and students can stay to eat a lunch they brought from home in order to be ready for the afternoon Kindermusik Adventure Camp.

Tiffany also has some other FABULOUS music camps planned this summer.  See the brief list below, then check out the details on her website.  Click here, where you can also register for her camps.

Summer 2008 blog postings:

A great way to enjoy the summer is to spend one hour a week (5 weeks) with your child in a Kindermusik Adventure camp.  Please see what was offered in Lakeland, Florida during the Summer of 2008, and make plans to join us NEXT summer !!!

On my website, http://musiconnx.kindermusik.net , it is easy to check the schedule for any of my semesters and enroll for the programs available.
