Try a music or art class at January Demo classes

Of course, you want to try a Kindermusik class with Ms. Debbie, or an art class with Ms. Carolyn, but you are worried about the cost, or whether your child will like it, or whether they will disrupt the class, or whether you will have to dance or sing.  Well, don’t worry so much, you can dance and sing when you want to, just like your child is encouraged to participate in their own way.  Your child may not be ecstatic about it the first day, but will grow to love it in just a few weeks (when they become familiar with the routine), and we can work through the cost issue (I’ve got my ways.)  But first, just come and try it out a class.

Kindermusik in Winter Haven – A survey for you

I am thrilled at the level of interest from families to have Kindermusik programs offered in Winter Haven.  More and more families are recognizing the value of music in the lives of their children and families, and want to have it more accessible.

I am excited to once again work with the wonderful families around Winter Haven, but I want to make sure to plan effectively for those families who are interested.  This survey will help me determine what times and programs are best for families, as well as a few other details.

There are several options that I mention in the survey that will be easier for you to review before you take the survey.

Kindermusik Playdate – This is a one-time event, up to an hour of fun musical activities, and includes music and 1 prop or instrument so parents can continue the fun and learning at home. These are currently scheduled on the 2nd Sat. of each month in the Lakeland location.  The next event is on October 8.  See the details on my blog:  Party with the Pumpkins

WINTER HAVEN Options:
  • A Playdate can be scheduled at a location of your choice, at a time that works for you and your group of friends.  (as it fits in my schedule)  (If interested, add it to your comments)
  • A Playdate can be scheduled by me at a central location at a time that many families find convenient.  (That’s why I need your feedback.)
Kindermusik Adventures –  Includes 5 weekly classes, up to an hour of fun musical activities based on a theme, and includes music, props, instruments, and materials so parents can continue the fun and learning at home.  The musical process is greatly enhanced for children when they have the opportunity to get familiar with the music, and have a chance to get accostomed to the routines of regularly structured music classes.  We can set this up so the cost can be divided into 2 monthly payments.  I’d like to offer the following programs in October/November at a central location at a time that many families find convenient.

For Babies (2 – 18 months):  Peek-A-Boo, I LOVE You !
Babies and mommies (or daddies, or grandmas) simply LOVE this semester full of traditional songs and activities that babies and their loving adults play to connect with each other.  These unique songs may come from all over the world, but the result is the same – building strong family bonds and laying a strong foundation for learning in Baby’s brain.

For Families (1 – 4 years – flexible):  Creatures in My Back Yard
I’d love to offer this semester of delightfully engaging songs and activities about the birds, bugs, pets, and wild critters that may be found in your yard or nearby park. Children have a natural connection with these creatures, and these songs and activities build and expand on this knowledge base.  But what you see is a happy child exploring the world around them in new and unique musical ways.

So PLEASE respond, and complete this survey right away !!!!
so I can use your feedback to schedule programs that work for as many families as possible.

In the Spring, we may look at the option of 10 week semesters, so we can consider the Family Time program.  In this case, we can extend the fun and learning, and are able to lower the average cost per class.

THANK you for participating in the survey.  I look forward to hearing from you, and being able to determine the best way to bring Kindermusik to Winter Haven.

Scaffolding with Animal pretend play

A child is on the floor, on all fours, looks up at an adult with eager eyes, and barks. Mom responds, “I see that I have a new puppy in the house ! I heard your loud bark. I see your eager eyes. It looks like the puppy wants something.”   The child considers what a dog would want, and creates ways to express what the dog would want without using words.

Children LOVE to pretend to be animals. Even children younger than 18 months old are acute observers of the world, and begin to imitate what they see how others… or other ANIMALS… act . WATCH ! and when you see these imitations, let it develop into a learning experience. … HOW?

FIRST, specifically describe what the child is doing, with a focus on “I see you…” This not only encourages the child’s sense of self and confidence in their abilities, but it also helps increase their language skills and vocabulary, by giving them words for what they are doing and feeling.

Then encourage them to expand, lead them to consider what else a puppy would do. “It looks like the puppy wants to play. What shall we do today, puppy?” Again, continue to describe their actions, interpreting for their “animal language”. Play along as the puppy’s owner, asking what the puppy needs to be happy. These are open ended questions that help guides their imagination, and allows them to remain the creative “leader” of this playful activity.

If they need some further encouragement, (some are too young to know the options, some are overwhelmed with the many options) ask simple choice questions, like “Is the puppy begging for a scratch behind the ear, or does he want his belly rubbed?” Or if there is time, “Would the puppy like to go for a walk, or play ball in the back yard?” Then it becomes easy for them to decide, and can become creative again once they get started that direction.

After a bit of open play, it may be wonderful to learn more about that type of animal, through active observation of your own pet (describing what they are doing) or reading a book featuring their favorite animal, or singing a song about that animal that includes the animal doing some of the typical things that animal does.

This will help them expand their knowledge of options for that animal, which will be fun to include during the next play session. Will they bring this new action into the play themselves? Or will you gently add that in through a choice question? During each new play session, WATCH to see what the child will ADD that is NEW for them. It is amazing how quickly they can learn so much about an animal they are interested in.

Through imitating animal movements, children are developing their gross motor skills, which can be incorporated into creative problem solving.  Through imitating animal sounds, children give their speech and language skills a work out, improving their articulation and creative sound making abilities.    This often leads to increasing their ability to communicate without using words, learning to use facial expressions and gestures to get their point across.  It is fun to watch and video tape, and keep around so that you can embarras them in their teenage years…   and keep it in your memories for a lifetime.

Pretend Play develops over time through a specific set of steps, and according to the experiences that child has. One of my previous blog postings “A Parents Guide to the Stages of Pretend Play” goes through those stages specifically in a more formal way.

But today is a good day to just get in a few good ideas and enjoy animal play with your young child. My next few blogs will contain some fun SONGS and RESOURCES that are about specific animals, which you can USE in your fun play. PLEASE feel free to ADD your thoughts about books, songs, rhymes, and simple PLAY ideas for our young “animal” friends.

In the Fiddle Dee Dee semester of Kindermusik Our Time, we are fully exploring lots of animals, the ways they move, the sounds, they make, and the things they LIKE and DO.  We are in the midst of enjoying rhymes, songs, and stories encouraging interactive animal play.   If you’d like to visit a class, check out www.kindermusik.com, to find a class near you.

If you are already part of MY Kindermusik class, or the class of another teacher… TELL ME…  which animals would YOU like to see the focus on in future blog postings.  My current schedule is to address DOGS, MICE, and PIGS – in that order.

I must end by sharing a story.  One of my best friends daughter, and her cousin, were enthralled with squirrels.  They pretended to be squirrels regularly throughout an entire YEAR !  With squirrel next “forts” in the living room, short tree climbing, and halloween costumes, they explored every aspect of being a squirrel.   They LEARNED so much about squirrels, and developed life skills and passions through their pursuit.

Which animal does YOUR child like to pretend to be?

Play and learn online about Things that GO

Sooo Coool !  I just looked up one of the recommended online sites from www.4kids.org section of the Sunday Comics section.  Had to, it said, “Click on the mode of transport that interest you the most, such as cars, trains, bikes or boats, to begin.”  It totally caught my attention.  We are ALL about that – in our Away We GO ! semester of Kindermusik Our Time.  Whoo – whoo !

SO, I tried their suggested url, and did not get anywhere – quite frustrating, but I do NOT give up !  I kept up my search on www.MyLearning.org (huge website containing free learning resources from museums, libraries, and archives) until I found it, and it is SOOOO worth it !

This link actually gets you to where you can START this interactive system:   Transport Explorer

Transportation Explorer

The instructions are very clear to start this interactive screen and activity, but I HIGHLY recommend for the parent to have the child in their lap as they explore these activities and games together – esp. the children in the Our Time program, who are 1 ½ – 3 ½ years old.

The child gets to choose from the four modes of transportation they see on the screen:  train, car, boat, and bicycle.  When they click on it, it will bring up a larger full drawing of the vehicle, along with words that label the different parts.  Follow the instructions to click on specific parts and the parent can read the words that identify the parts and help explain how the vehicle works.  For example, the steam train interactively demonstrates how the fire in the hot box heats the pipes that heat the water to create the steam that push the pistons… etc.   The kids are going to LOVE THIS !

The full screen mode is Waaay better – the larger picture shows the moving parts more effectively.  This full visual on the screen, combined with the sound, the sight of the printed word, and a parent reading details that the child is very interested in – along with the closeness to the parent and their full attention – makes for a FULLY multi-sensory experience that sets a child up for successful learning – (just like we do in Kindermusik).

This is a great enhancement activity for those in this Kindermusik program, as well as a fun learning experience for those who are just FASCINATED by Things that GO !

They will hear the sounds of the vehicles.  Imitate the sounds!  It is not only fun, it helps the brain process this information effectively, and creates a great opportunity for better articulation because it strengthens the muscles in the mouth in new and unusual ways.

They will learn new vocabulary (words for the different parts of the vehicles).  After the initial demonstration, there are two games with these words – one that allows for labeling the parts, and one that encourages the use of these words in sentences with “fill in the blank” style.

They will learn processes and physics (how things work).  If you get a chance, show them the real parts of a bike or car that you have so they can really help it relate to real life objects.  And take advantage of opportunities to take them out for a real train ride (see my previous blog posting), or a real boat !

WOW !  All of that learning right at your fingertips on the computer.  Enhance that learning with fun songs and activities in weekly Kindermusik classes!  Let’s make some noise together.  Whoo – whoo !   Honk-Honk !  Ding-Ding!  Tooot – Tooot !

Do you know of another online site that helps young people learn about modes of transportation?
